This book documents the early history of Wayne County. Beginning in 1701, the book addresses John Lawson and his contributions, then follows up with chapters on the horrible days of the Tuscarora Wars. It studies the lives of the early settlers and how they developed an agrarian economy. “People and Plantations” then takes a look at antebellum plantations. Rich with pictures from John White’s early depictions of American Indians to antebellum plantations, this book is a must for any history lover..

This creative non-fiction book tells the story of the end of the War Between the States as it affected Goldsboro and Wayne County. It describes the Reconstruction period by the use of letters, diaries, and other artifacts along with family stories. The author, Emily Weil, has the diary writers “come to life” as characters in this sweeping tale. Sherman with his large army came to town and changed forever the sleepy hamlet called Goldsboro.

Cornwallis’ Campaign - Wilmington to Yorktown - by Emily Weil Cornwallis’ Campaign - Wilmington to Yorktown - by Emily Weil
This second book by Emily Weil has been well reviewed as an “excellent historic accomplishment of wartime impacts on this area.” This creative non-fiction book tells the story of the British General’s march from the port city of Wilmington, N.C., through what would later become Wayne County, finally to his defeat at Yorktown, Virginia. Well researched and documented, it tells the story of people, places and events along the route and the impact the movement of such a large army and its followers would have on the local communities.
